Michigan Rep. Thanedar Urges Trump’s Impeachment Over Kilmar Abrego Garcia Case

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democratic U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar of Michigan is calling for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump, citing the wrongful deportation of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to El Salvador in defiance of a Supreme Court ruling.

In a press release issued Friday, Rep. Thanedar’s office condemned the Trump administration for what it described as a “blatant disregard” of the Supreme Court’s order requiring the U.S. government to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return. The statement called the administration’s actions a “direct defiance of the U.S. Constitution.”

“I've seen enough,” Rep. Thanedar wrote on social media Thursday. “Trump is not abiding by a Supreme Court ruling. I fully support impeaching him. Now.”

Abrego Garcia was deported last month despite a legal order barring his removal. According to a court filing, the Trump administration claimed the deportation resulted from an “administrative error” and an “oversight,” leading to his transfer to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador.

Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis ordered the government to “facilitate and effectuate” Abrego Garcia’s return. The Justice Department appealed the decision, but the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the judge’s authority, affirming the administration must assist in his release while requiring further proceedings in district court.

Judge Xinis later amended her order, requiring the administration to act swiftly to release Abrego Garcia and to disclose his current location, along with steps being taken for his return. Despite these directives, the administration has not provided the required information but has acknowledged that Abrego Garcia remains alive and in custody in El Salvador.

Rep. Thanedar’s office argues that the administration’s failure to comply constitutes an impeachable offense. “This non-compliance falls under ‘high crimes’ as outlined in Section 4 of Article Two of the United States Constitution,” the statement read.

Adding further complexity to the case, Trump met with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele at the White House on Monday. During a press conference, Bukele stated that El Salvador would not return Abrego Garcia to the United States. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi later said it is “up to El Salvador” to decide whether he is returned.
